Bristol Rewind - Sweded Classics

REMAKE YOUR FAVOURITE FILM

The Bristol Filmmakers Festival 2008 – which takes place at the Watershed and Arnolfini on the weekend of 14th and 15th June – is calling for DIY remakes of classic movies.

The programme takes its inspiration from the recent hit film Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black and Mos Def in which a resourceful video store manager and inventive friend confront the problem of the erasure of the video store’s entire stock by creating homemade versions of the famous films they rent out. The process is known as Sweding.

The Bristol Filmmakers Festival 2008 welcomes any homages/pastiches/rip-offs of any popular films. Entries to the Festival so far have included Pretty Woman and Alien. The Festival organisers suggest not directly using the original copyrighted music from the film – they hope the filmmakers will be equally resourceful there as well.

Godzilla, Last Tango in Paris, Blade Runner, The Birds, Gandhi – there are plenty of films ripe for sweding. You just need to be incredibly imaginative and resourceful. In many ways, this is the ultimate example of the independent filmmaking that this festival’s been created to celebrate.

Tickets are £5 & are on sale from the Watershed Box Office on 0117 927 5100.

The deadline for submissions to the ‘Bristol Rewind – Sweded Classics’ programme is Wednesday 11th June. Go to www.bristolfilm.co.uk for more details or email bfmf2008@yahoo.com.
